Poetry: “Ichnofossils”

Another paleontology related thing, this one about trace fossils, like footprints, for example.

There they are
The things they left behind
Where feet
Once touched
A muddy bank
Buzzing with life
A claw that scraped
The river bed
As ancient limbs
Swam across its width
A burrow filled
For us to find
All the turnings
Once dug
Untold years ago

Where bones must stand
Or lay in state
These things imbue
Them with new life
The things that they all
Left behind
When bodies moved and
Limbs once swam
