Poetry: “Synapsids”

Hail to our ancestors!

All that we are
We owe to thee
Our long and winding
Rose first to greatness
Long ago
Yes still before
The dinosaurs
How skulls were shaped
Set them apart
A separation
From the rest
Their sturdy legs
Carried them far
Though there was hardship
For a time
Some ancient cousins
All extinct
Their sail backed bones
Museum have
Made them last
Left Dinosauria
In asteroid dust
They rose and prospered
And behold
Here we all stand
From what they were
