Poetry: “Holiday madness”

Ah, the aftermath…

Holiday madness

Stepping out on the other side
Of chaotic holiday madness
Blinking in the daylight
As if waking from a dream
Surveying the wreckage
The detritus
In its wake
Crumpled wrapping paper
Dead trees
Oh, such a waste
And leftovers of dinners past
In the fridge
Stores are reared and ready
To exchange unwanted gifts
That we all still
Persist in this
This crazy Christmas dance
Yet even as I think it
What madness
What a waste
I know in barely a year’s time
We will do it
All again
