Poetry: “Letters”

The title was inspired by the song by the same name from the musical “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812”.

How sweet it was
The days
When words had weight
And letters
Composed with blood and tears
Written by flickering light
Were all we had
To share our thoughts
And feelings
Every word
Written with the utmost care
Fueled by passion
So eagerly awaited
Though they could take weeks
Patience then
Was truly a virtue
Unlike today
When our instant messaging
Forces our hands
And words
No time to mull over phrases
Or terms
No time for delicacy
While the other waits
Though this speed has merit
I still grow nostalgic
For letters
Carefully written
Rustling paper in my hands
