Poetry: “Substance”

A note on shopping malls.

They dot the landscape
Identical glass houses
Pristine and white
Swollen display cases
For the wares within
Miles and miles
Of clothing on racks
Perfume counters
And endless shelves
Of designer foot wear
Curling like snakes
Up and down and up again
The food courts
Expertly planned
For each age and taste
Screaming children
Heard above the muzak
Each one a near clone
Of the others
Yet all claim to be unique
In colorful adverts
Crammed into mailboxes
Or sent to spam accounts
“Come visit us, please
We are all style and no substance.”
And no one seems to care
