Poetry: “On birthdays”

More time to contemplate on this subject.

***~***~***~***

On birthdays

How do you count them
The years
Of life
Gone by
Like rings on stumps of trees
Not visible
To the eye
Unless you cut
Must too deep into your bones
See them then
The times
The memories
Gathered up for all to see
Experiences
The mistakes
Scar tissue
Formed around each ring of years
Some years good
Some years bad
But altogether
It forms one great bit whole
Such a minor
Comfort
To cling to
When all seems truly lost
To know
It will all
Even out
At the end of all your day
