Poetry: “On statues”

On statues and their merits.

On statues

A carving on stone
Or fine marble
Expertly formed
By an artist
Each stroke of the chisel
Carefully planned
A perfect reproduction
A beauty everlasting
Unlike nature
It will never fade
The flowers never wilt
The flesh never sag
Or collapse slowly in decay

But is not beauty defined
By its expiration date?
That stays the same
Becomes dull
Common place
So nature’s beauty is grander
Than any reproduction
Because it doesn’t last
