Poetry: “Berliner Dom”

A poem inspired by my recent trip to  Berlin.

Berliner Dom

Your presence quite foreboding
Facade all stained with black
As if all this city’s seen
Has burned into your walls

The darkness of the wartime years
Has left some parts so black
It’s as if the sins of mighty men
Made them turn out so

Yet there is still much goodness
There’s goodness and there’s light
Your gilded parts still gleaming
It shows the city’s heart

As your mighty bells ring out
Take lessons from the past
Then let the sunshine brighten you
And help us all move on
