Poetry: “Charcoal”

There’s something intensely satisfying about working with charcoal, I find.

Black and churning
On the page
Dust that stains
And smears the skin

Powdered blackness
Stirred by wind
Smudge it gently
Shadows long

Highlight gently
White that shines
Against the blackness
Standing out

Hear the crunch
As they collide
Charcoal pieces
Against the page

Makes you shiver
Makes you sigh
Draws your soul out
Draws it out
