Poetry: “Year’s first morning”

Happy new year everyone! This is my offering for today.

Year’s first morning

New Year’s Day smells like sulfur

And sour cheap champagne

Left outside in the cold

White snow stained with gunpowder

Like some far off battle field

Bottles that lay broken

Beer cans gaping empty against the wall

Laughter than once echoed

Between the tall buildings

Has been replaced by the silence

Of man sequestered inside apartments

Nature wakes bewildered

To see all the remains

Of just one night

Where all the rules were abandoned

Such an ominous start to the news year

Leaving such remains

To be covered once again by snow

Falling softly from the sky

Perhaps there is some hope yet
